2011 Genie Award Winners

Denis Villeneuve

Incendies was the big winner at tonight's Genie Awards, taking a field best eight trophies including those for Best Picture and Best Direction for Denis Villeneuve.

Villeneuve also took the award for Best Adapted Screenplay at the ceremony honouring Canadian film, while Incendies' Lubna Azabel took Best Lead Actress.

Rounding out its big take were awards for cinematography, editing, overall sound (how vague), and sound editing.

Barney's Version was the night's other big winner, with its non-Canadian stars Paul Giammatti, Dustin Hoffman, and Minnie Driver picking up Best Actor, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress trophies, respectively.

It also won awards for costume design, art direction, make-up and original score.

Meanwhile, Jay Baruchel took home a fan-voted honour for favourite Canadian acting talent. Other nominees included Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams, suggesting Baruchel may have won simply for showing up at the Ottawa ceremony. (Right? Right?)
