Chelsea Handler to host VMAs

Chelsea Handler will host the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards on September 12, the network announced yesterday.

Handler, known for her E! talk show Chelsea Lately and best-selling books recognizes she may not be the first name that pops to mind when you think MTV.

“It’s obvious that whenever anybody ever thinks of hip-hop or rap, they think of ‘Chelsea Lately,’” she says sarcastically.

Still, she thinks she's a good fit for the show.

“It’s a relaxed show, so people aren’t as uptight,” she says. “It’s not the Grammys, it’s not as serious as that. It’s an MTV audience so I’m sure some people won’t know who I am. But by the end of the show, I won’t know who anybody is, just like I don’t now.”

Handler's only the fourth woman to ever host the VMAs, after Sarah Silverman in 2007 and Roseanne in 1994 and Bette Midler, who co-hosted in 1984.

With Chelsea hosting I might actually tune in this year!

Performers announced for the show include Kanye West, Drake, Florence + The Machine, B.O.B and of course. . . Justin Bieber.
