Boardwalk Empire, the Big C breakthrough Golden Globe noms

There weren't many surprises when the Golden Globe television nominees were announced this morning. In fact, they looked much like the nominees for September's Emmy Awards.

HBO's Boardwalk Empire seems to have made the biggest new impact, with nominations for best drama series, and acting honours for Steve Buscemi and Kelly MacDonald.

The Walking Dead also grabbed its first best drama series nod.

And the Golden Globes succeeds where the Emmys didn't, nominating Katey Sagal for best drama actress for Sons of Anarchy.

In the comedy arena, Showtime's The Big C broke through with nominations for best comedy series, and best actress for Laura Linney.

The Big Bang Theory, meanwhile, gets its first best comedy series nod, along with a best actor nomination for Emmy winner Jim Parsons.

But other than that, it's kind of same old.

Glee's nominated for five awards, including best comedy series, and acting nods for Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Lea Michele and Chris Colfer.

Modern Family's also got a best comedy series nod, and acting nominations for Sofia Vergara and Emmy winner Eric Stonestreet.

Meanwhile, Mad Men's up for best drama series, as well as acting honours for Jon Hamm and Elisabeth Moss.

Used to seeing 30 Rock, Tina Fey, Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, Dexter, Michael C. Hall, Hugh Laurie, Edie Falco, Toni Collette and Brian Cranston on the ballot?

Well you're going to see them again, as they're all nominated for Globes.

Not to say they don't deserve it, but if we take these nominees as an indication, TV hasn't given us anything new to be excited about.

And the Golden Globes has a reputation for being slightly edgier and younger with its TV categories. Keri Russell won for her first season of Felicity back in the day. And last year True Blood's Anna Paquin took the prize. This year, not so much.
