CBC announced a new reality show yesterday called Cover Me Canada, in which young musical acts will cover songs by iconic Canadian artists for the chance at a $100,000 prize and a recording contract with Universal for their first original single.
Unsigned musicians aged 12 and up are invited to audition by submitting an online video in which they cover one of four songs they may be too young to recognize: Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot, Run To You by Bryan Adams, Life is a Highway by Tom Cochrane or Black Velvet by Alannah Myles.
While I love all four of these options, if I was to audition I'd perform a cover of Life Is A Highway, for sentimental reasons. Oh how we laughed in our childhood when my younger brother thought the lyrics were "Life Is A Driveway." We subsequently liked to alternate between driveway and "Life Is A BiWay." It was the 90s, and rhyming was fun.
Finalists who make it past the initial online auditions will perform live on television.
While the host and judges have yet to be announced, the CBC is set to reveal its full 2011-2012 television schedule tomorrow in Toronto.
