Canadian entertainment roundup!

A few entertainment stories from Canada this week that are worth noting . . .

  • Barney's Version, Incendies and Splice are among the top nominees for this year's Genie Awards, honouring the best in Canadian film. The awards will be handed out at Ottawa's NAC on March 10, and broadcast on CBC.

  • Despite being dropped by the History Channel in the U.S., History Television Canada has announced an April 10 premiere date for the Kennedys, a miniseries starring Greg Kinnear and Katie Holmes as -- you guessed it! -- the Kennedys. Personally, I would hesitate to air anything that involves Katie Holmes attempting to act (except for Dawson's Creek reruns, of course).

  • The CBC has announced new plans to strengthen its role as public broadcaster over the next five years. That includes a strengthened commitment to original Canadian content, a new commitment to air 10 signature events per year, expansion of regional programming, and development of new digital services. It also still involves getting rid of Jeopardy!

  • Global has announced a Gleekathon as counterprogramming to tomorrow night's Superbowl, airing on CTV. Starting at 8 p.m. on Global, catch two favourite episodes of Glee, including the Rocky Horror tribute, followed by the 'Viewing Party' episode of the Office, in which the Dunder Mifflinites get together at Gabe's house to watch an ep of Glee. At 10:30, Global's got the much-hyped, all-new, post-Superbowl episode of Glee, while CTV's got the season finale of Flashpoint.
