While dancing the night away at Zaphod's on Saturday evening, I tried my best to appear up with what the young kids are into these days.
I recognized and sang along with songs by Robyn, Florence + the Machine, and Modest Mouse (a band whose songs would have played there on my last visit as well, back in 2007).
But I will admit that more than once the DJ played songs that the rest of the bar enthusiastically sang along with, while I silently danced alongside them.
A couple of these times I was motivated to (as inconspicuously as possible) Shazam the tracks that had brought the dance floor to life.
And while the necessity of such action perhaps shows my age, I'm sure glad I did it. I haven't stopped listening to Foster the People's 'Pumped Up Kicks' since.
The song by the L.A.-based indie-poppers appears on their 2010 EP and was the lead single off their 2011 album called Torches, so I don't know how long I've been out of the loop on its popularity. But damn it's catchy!
While the lyrics tell of a troubled youth who may just shoot his classmates, the song is infectiously danceable.
I'd feel bad about that, but as I witnessed Saturday night, I'm not the only one who finds joy in its beats.
What do you think of 'Pumped Up Kicks'? Have you been listening to it for months? Have I now lost all credibility as being on the cutting edge of all things cool? Hit up the comments and let me know.
